USA – NYC (Part 2)

1:28:00 PM

Yoohoo! I'm back with the second part of my adventure in NYC.

As always, click on street address and they will open straight into google maps app - saving you some time to type + ensure the correct address. Enter your 'Current Location' when in New York and it should take the shortest route for you, which may be different from mine, based on where you would be.

Do also look out for the gold stars ('') for extras on how to save money! All prices are in USD unless otherwise stated.

Day Three – NYC

It's brunch time again! Choice of the day is Greecologies, a greek yoghurt lab. I like their open space concept, industrial style interior and the patio hideout at the back. So minimal and cozy at the same time, if that is even possible.

Yum! The smoothie is deceivingly filling... I was filled to the brim after attempting to finish just half of it. Is this why people drink smoothies as meal replacements?? I really love the Chia Power Pudding - chia seeds, peach cubes and yummy yoghurt, all the good stuff in one cup indeed.

Pictured is the Matcha, Coconut & Bergamot Smoothie ($8.50) and Chia Power Pudding ($6).

Greecologies is located at 379 Broome St, opening hours 8am - 8pm. Early birds rejoice!

So after having yoghurt for brunch (lol), we went over to the Flatiron district to have a look at the iconic building that is said to look 2D from certain angles. I don't know which angel's angle that is but from where I stand at the park looking up, the Flatiron building just looks... Phallic... Ya know... HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

To get here from Greecologies, take the metro line 4/6 at Spring St and alight at 23 Street. Take the Times Square exit and walk for about 5 mins - you will not miss the building.

Finally having Burger & Lobster again after 5 months!!! I have so much love for this place that if I strike lottery (with a big enough prize) one day I will franchise this or fly to London to have it.

If you haven't read my older post, Burger & Lobster originated in London and can now be found in a few other countries outside of the U.K., one of which being New York City!

Menu and pricing remains the same – wow at just £20 vs $20 (technically $24 cos #tips) for greens, fries and main course of either:
1. A lobster roll with SUPER generous dollops of lobster meat stuffed between a buttered brioche bun (no butter sauce!)
2. A full 1.5lbs lobster, grilled or steamed to your fancy and a serving of THE lemon garlic butter sauce
3. A steak burger with Super thick and juicy beef patty with bacon and/or cheese.

After many visits... I still couldn't make myself choose the burger. Maybe I'm not a burger connoisseur/fanatic like the rest of the patrons in the restaurant here in the NYC branch... Cos 75% of them were having that! Could it be because it's more convenient for them to dust off the crumbs and go back to work after that? I will never know. All I know is the US serving of lobster is slightly larger than the UK, and I was so so so satisfied that I got to have it here at least. I'd say yes to Burger & Lobster anytime.

P.S. It is going for AED127 per set in B&L Dubai!

Burger & Lobster is located at 39 W 19th St. Opens at 11.30am and closing times vary.

Wandered around the streets and making our way to the shopping area in the Flatiron District. Passed this Puerto Rican shaved ice cart manned by what we call an "auntie" (who also happens to be fanning herself like crazy because seriously I am also fanning myself like mad but only in my head cos #image) by accident and how can I say no to this beautiful rainbow ice thingy? It's only $2 and tastes like our local Sng Bao - remixed. Hahaha.

Known as the Piragua, its name is derived from the combination of the Spanish words 'Pirámide' (pyramid) and 'Agua' (water)" because the piragua has a pointy, conical shape.

Yellow taxi-cabs, so very NYC.

H&M Home! Why don't we have this product category/assortment in SG?

Broadway Bites - a seasonal pop up of food vendors between June to July (Summer edition) and another one in Fall.

Broadway Bites is located at Greenley Square – Broadway, between 32nd and 33rd Street.

So we gave this a miss and hopped over to Momofuku Milk Bar for a treat... Only to realise it has ran out of ice cream for the day as the soft serve machine is down. Oei, why you no put a notice on your FB page?! We walked for close to 20 minutes just to be turned down. :(

Momofuku Milk Bar (midtown) is located at 15 W 56th St.

Some convocation thingy going on in the area... Look at all the students. #asianinvasion

Luckily Cafe Zaiya was pretty much round the corner.. at about another 20mins walk away.

I felt like a student at lunch break upon stepping into Cafe Zaiya, cos it's very much styled like a... High school cafeteria. Best known for the soft serve ice cream (perhaps?), they also offer bread, biscuits, Madeleines and a whole lot more nibbles, sandwiches, as well as noodles and mains that I think would be comfort food level 999 on a cold, rainy day.

From Cee's IG.

Cee tried the black sesame flavour. So minimal eh this grey ice cream. Hahahaha! Oh and this lady even asked us what flavour is grey... After staring at us for a while... Hahaha. #weirdasians

After much deliberation... I went for the Lychee Tea with Boba. I would later learn that it is one of the most expensive bubble tea I have had in my life. Hahaha. That set me back by a good $4.90 (~$6.00 incl tips) and it was sweet AF. I miss my KOI pearl milk tea with 25% sugar back home............... Ahhh. Here it is! Nonetheless, still a refreshing treat in the summer heat.

Cafe Zaiya has a few branches, the store we visited is located at 18 E 41st St. Opens 8am - 8pm from Mon through Sat, 11am - 7pm on Sun.

Followed the plaques on the floor to the New York Public Library!

Tadah! Cee mentioned something about Gossip Girls or Pretty Little Liars but I don't watch TV so... IDK??? I am a cavewoman, yes you're right!

But this cavewoman like to take photos. Hahahahaha.

So we hung around the NYPL area for just a while and walked over to the Grand Central Terminal since it was just a short stroll away. Google Maps route info here.

So packed! It was late afternoon and almost peak hour, so the station was packed, packed, packed! People were streaming in and out of the exits, making stopping in the middle for a photo totally impossible. Obviously. Haha!

After a while of staring into space and looking at pissed, rushing commuters, we realise it's just 15mins to our scheduled entry time to the Top of The Rock. Turbo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the path we took. There are transit options available but we couldn't trust the waiting time so... On our legs we dashed! Routing details here.

Turbo-boost but can still hold up for a pic of this giant bath tub that looks like a pad (lol) from afar.

And here we are! Looking down at the concrete jungle where dreams are made of.

Pano of the side facing the Empire State Building.

What is this long and strrange building called again??

I used to always see this image on people's instagram, framed up on their bedroom walls, on notebooks and so much more... Never thought I would get to see the exact same view live, in person.

Side track: If this trip taught me something, that is to reinforce that gratitude towards life. I always believe in counting one's blessings, appreciate simple pleasures in life and focus on what you have in my life, rather than what you don't.

While there are moments in life and during the trip that made me wonder why I was even there, I gave myself a moment to brood over it (for no longer than an hour), erased the negative emotions and replaced it with gratitude. As phoney as it sounds, it really is the way to keep looking up and not allowing the negativity to brood and worse, multiply. Accept the fact that everybody has bad moments, brush it off then move on! If it happens again, talk about it, work on a solution then move on again.

Après tout, c'est la vie, non? Ce n'est pas si mal que ça!

Another picture of the view, in color.

"Photoshop the sun in my hands." or it could be "I swear that was all he had."

★ Book your tickets online to skip the lines and go straight to the lift (that will take you up) at the time slot chosen. It costs $32 on Top of The Rock website but only $30 on viator. Save a further $10 on your first booking, no minimum spend! I've made reservations for my Go LA card and Dubai Desert tour on Viator and redeemed it with no problems. It's 100% reliable.

Sign up on Viator here and make your reservation for ToTR here (option to upgrade to the tour but we only opted for the observation deck admission tickets)!

**To ensure that you can apply the credit on your order, simply change the currency to USD on the top left hand corner as the system only allow usage of credit on orders of the same currency, i.e. your order in SGD will not receive the USD10 discount.

Top of the Rock is located at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. The nearest metro station would be 47-50 Sts - Rockefeller Ctr on the B/D/F/M line. Exit, cross the road and you'll see the building.

Rockefeller Center from below. All... The... Way... Up...

Summer Garden & Bar! This is a seasonal gathering place that opens throughout summer and is perfect for catching up with friends (lol who happen to be in NYC at the same time as you) over a drink or two.

Located at 20 W 50th St, it is also accessible via the metro on 47-50 Sts - Rockefeller Ctr, the B/D/F/M line.

Sunset at the Manhattan Grid. It is called the Manhattanhenge, see more pictures here! Onward to Times Square since it's just a few streets away...

And here we are! At 9pm, it is still bustling with energy and full of people on the podium, up the stairs, on the streets, at the crossing... Everywhere!

While all we could manage was to just sit at the curb and watch people go past us.

Times Square is probably one of THE iconic places to be in New York City, so be sure to pay this place a visit for shopping, stoning (lol like us) or people watching. The nearest metro station is Times Sq - 42 St on the N/Q/R/S/1/2/3/7 lines.

Day Four – NYC

Our last full morning at NYC is spent at none other than... Coney Island + Luna Park! We bought sandwiches from 7-11 and ate it (discreetly, of course) on the way to Coney Island. The nearest metro station is Coney Island - Stillwell Av and had direct access via F line from East Broadway station. Upon exiting the station, follow the crowd or walk in the direction of the Ferris Wheel to go to Luna Park, Brighton Beach and the boardwalk.

View of the park from the subway car.

 So vintage-y!

The famous Nathan Hot Dogs at Luna Park.

Being a total tourist with that hat and pose and basically everything. Including that inappropriate-for-the-beach frilly dress.

Attempting the Stylenanda photoshoots at random locations with a lot of people (or none at all) in the background...

Another big-ass selfie cos look! My hair is on fleek! My face doesn't look round or big... HEHE.

Sneakily taking pictures of Cee's back. Lol!

★ It is free to walk on the boardwalk (lol) and ride tickets are sold separately and charged per ride, with ticket booklets sold at the entry to the rides. It is great for people who don't take certain rides as there is an option to purchase a single-use ticket for the ones they want to play. However, it will mean that it costs more for the hardcore players.

We did not take any rides as we were not in the right outfit. Haha!

Luna Park is located at 1000 Surf Ave, Brooklyn.

After being roasted at the beach, we decided it's time to head back to the city so our next stop: Bibble and Sip! Walk to Ocean Pkwy station and take the Q line to 49 St. Alight after 22 stops. Routing info here.

Fuji Apple Green Tea! Yummmmmm.

No matcha cream puffs for us because we were super full from the nibbles we had at Coney Island.

Bibble & Sip is located at 253 W 51st St.

Started making our way over to Columbus Circle, a busy traffic circle/roundabout in Manhattan. Routing details here, it's a bit of a walk!

And this is it. It is really just a traffic junction. Haha! We saw ponies passing by, pulling little carriages with flowers behind them though. Wonder what's the occasion, huh? When you're done taking pics of the circle, you can also head to The Shops at Columbus Circle, just across the road!

The Shops at Columbus Circle is located at 10 Columbus Circle.

It's time to catch a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty after some retail therapy. There are a few ways to look at the Lady Liberty, some involving tickets and some not.

★ We saved ourselves some $$ by taking the Staten Island Ferry for free! It is headed for Staten Island, another borough of New York, and passes by the Statue on the way. It's not super near but good enough for not paying any money.

From Columbus Circle, walk to 57 St - 7 Av station and take the R line to South Ferry station. The ride is approx 25mins (13 stns) long. Route details here!
Easy, right? Will do anything for free stuff. HAHAHA!

Almost now...

Manhattan skyline again because nice what.

SPOTTED THE STATUE!!!

This is the actual size of the Statue's view from the ferry... Against the sailboats in front and the close up below... Yep that's about it. Hahaha.

ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM. This was on the way back from Staten Island... Because the first time I wasn't in time to snap when the ferry was at the *right* spot.

It's possible to do a round trip without waiting for the next inbound ferry. Just be prepared to dash off when you are asked to disembark and run along to the boarding side. The crew members usually wait for about 10 minutes before going back to the Manhattan side so you have a bit of a buffer if you're unable to get off quickly.

This way, you can save time for other things, right?

Skyline again, this time interrupted by some joker's hand.

After getting off Staten Island Ferry for real, we made our way to the last stop of the NYC part of our trip: The High Line

The High Line is an open space/park situated on a now-defunct railroad. There are many, many art installations and performances in the various parts on the park going on all year round. One of which being the Sleepwalking man... Which I found to be absolutely creepy especially at night, when it can be mistaken for a real person! How spooky. We didn't make it till that end of the  park as we were headed to the Hudson River side where you will be able to catch the sunset (yes, again) against New Jersey in the background.

The result? This absolutely breath-taking view. It was definitely worth the walk!

 Big blooms.

  From below, through the fences.

The final ride home on the metro was oddly smooth-sailing. Take the line 7 metro from 34 St - Hudson Yard station and change to line 4/5/6 at 42 St - Grand Centra station. After which, change to the J/Z line at Canal St station and finally home at Delancey St/Essex St station. Surprisingly this was the longest journey we made on the NYC metro... Guess we were just sad about leaving NYC so we experienced the metro the most we could. Also because can't walk la. HAHAHA

On the way home, we finally decided to give the corner ice cream store a try. Turned out to be one of the best ice creams I ever had in my entire life!

We had the Tea Dance flavour – a smooth and tasty blend of Nilgiri Tea Leaf, Lemon Charcoal and Salted Caramel on a Salty Blue Corn Honey cone. At $4 a scoop and additional $2 (or was it $3) for the cone, yes it's not cheap, but it's hella worth the $$$ and calories!

It tastes something like... HD's Salted Caramel biscuits ice cream with hints of fragrant tea and strangely, tastes like fruit loops when taken with the blue cone. Must try if you're in the area.

Ice & Vice is located at 221 E Broadway. Opens 12pm-10pm on Sun to Thu, 12pm-12pm on Fri and Sat.

Day Five – NYC -> LAX

It's finally time for the West Coast. Off to California we go!

There are a few ways to get to California and the most cost-efficient way is by air.

There are many airports serving New York area - JFK, LGA and EWR. Depending on which area you're staying at, it could make some difference to which airport is nearer and cheaper to use.

JFKJohn F. Kennedy International Airport, located in the Queens borough, is by far the airport with the most convenient public transport options. There are AirTrains to and fro (details in previous post), many buses/shuttle services and cabs are easy to call. However, the flights I found for my travel dates tend to be on about $50-90 more expensive when departing from JFK and the ETD is not as ideal. That is true sometimes, but not all the time. I did a random search for flights departing from JFK to LAX for next week and turns out, American Airlines departing from JFK only cost $600 as compared to United Airlines via EWR at $1,100.

★ My suggestion? Compare between the two airports and go for the cheapest airfare with departure/arrival time with the best fit for your trip!

LGA - LaGuardia Airport, located in the , doesn't serve direct flights to Los Angeles at the moment. ★ Prices for flights departing from LGA with stopovers (for example, in IAH/ORD/FLL) are almost always the same as direct flights to LAX via EWR or JFK. No reason to opt for this... Unless you're planning a short layover in these cities. Then I saw this post on Bloomberg. Much lulz.

EWR - Newark Liberty International Airport is located in New Jersey. From where we stayed at - Lower East Side, Manhattan, it actually takes the SAME time for us to get to either JFK or EWR, so it's a bit of a dilemma at first.

We decided to fly from EWR as United Airlines Flight 333's departure time of approx 10am (arrival at 1pm) seems like a good idea, and at only S$350, there's no reason to say no! I would always prefer direct flights because I mean... Why not... Right???

★ TAKE NOTE! Domestic flights rarely include check-in baggage, so we had to purchase extras at $35 for 1 bag (<23kg) each. Subsequent bags costs $50 each, so if you are intending to travel across US like the both of us, go easy on the shopping in the start of your trip! Baggage fees are payable up front at the counter or pre-purchased at time of booking. To speed things up, we paid upon booking so we could zip through the check-in portion.

View on bus to EWR from Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan.

The most convenient way to get to EWR from LES Manhattan (via public transport) would be taking a Lyft to 42 St - Port Authority Bus Terminal station and taking the NJ Transit Bus that will take you directly to Terminal C. Only one transfer point = lesser time spent on navigating and lugging our baggage around. Not the cheapest, but the most convenient - in terms of efficiency.

Why not the metro since it is directly connect by 42 St - Port Authority Bus Terminal station?

The metro route. Bear in mind that the estimated time above does not take walking dragging time between stations and waiting time into consideration. (click to enlarge)

Flight at 10am means getting out of the house at 7.30am if you buffer an extra 30mins into the total journey time above. The spending of $30 compared to $6 in exchange for comfort and 2 more hours to snooze seems like a great idea. It probably is, unless you don't have much baggage, haha!

It costs approx $30 (only $25 if you use a $5 credit from signing up for Lyft here!) from Lower East Side, Manhattan to Port Authority Bus Terminal. Upon arrival at the main entrance, enter and go down the escalator on your left after passing the automated ticketing machines and exit the building – the queue for NJ Transit Bus is discreetly tucked away along the walkway, see below (image from Google lol).

NJ Transit Bus (Port Authority Bus Terminal) 41st Street between 8th and 9th avenues.

It costs $17 per person, per way. No tap cards required, payment can be made by cash or card. Journey time is about 40-45 mins depending on traffic conditions. See more details below or here

Alternatives to EWR from New York here.

Our flight details below:

United Airlines 333 ➔ EWR ✈ LAX
ETD: 1005hrs // ETA: 1300hrs
Flight time: approx 5 hrs 55 mins
Flight distance: approx 2,454 miles
EWR (GMT+12) is 3 hrs ahead of LAX (GMT+15).

Bye, New York!

 ----------------------

Finally, finally done with the NYC post. Coincidentally... We just left New York for LA just a month ago! Can't wait to share with you about our time in L.A.~~
